Chapter 27: Performance
“From ten to twelve…,” muttered Tyr, meaning that their recruitment period for these days was in two-hour increments, so… Tyr surveyed the tens of thousands of examinees around him.
How could they possibly eliminate so many candidates in such a short time?
At that moment, the student with dark-rimmed eyes, using a voice amplification technique that made everyone hear, spoke to the entire plaza.
“There are 17,624 participants in this round. Hello, everyone, I am Kaga, a senior among some of you, and the majority will be eliminated in this assessment. Let me clarify the rules in advance: Avalon does not accept students of emperor or higher level, a rule I’m sure you’re all aware of. So, don’t let us catch any candidates hiding their true abilities; once discovered, there will be severe consequences.”
Kaga’s calm voice silenced all discussions, and everyone turned to look at each other. The seemingly frail man remained indifferent and continued.
“Let me tell you in advance, Avalon’s assessment is not child’s play, you can’t just come and go as you please. You need to be prepared to be injured or even killed at any moment. Of course, even if you regret now, it’s of no use.”
Kaga’s voice sounded somewhat impatient. He waved his hand and spoke.
“Well then, let’s begin.”
What’s beginning? Are they really going to be assessed on such a grand platform?
Where are the assessors? What’s the topic?
Everyone looked puzzled, unable to make sense of it all.
But in the next moment, four iron cages descended from the sky.
With a loud bang, a cloud of dust billowed up. Just as everyone was surprised at how these four things fell from the sky, a terrifying roar erupted from the cages!
Roar!!
When everyone looked closer, they were immediately frightened to the core, because what was locked inside the iron cages were enormous monsters exuding a thick demonic aura.
Tyr squinted his eyes slightly. These four monsters were extraordinary, clearly surpassing the level of the former Ogre King. They were probably at least Level 6 monsters. Dealing with Level 6 monsters with Tyr’s current strength would be nothing short of a pipe dream.
As for the others, let alone Tyr, Level 5 was already considered the pinnacle of the Destroyer. Level 6 probably had entered the realm of the Emperor. The mere emanation of their magic power sent shivers down Tyr’s spine.
Tyr glanced at the followers behind him, furrowing his brow slightly as he looked at Dragon Slayer.
“Dragon Slayer, you choose two, I’ll choose two, and we’ll split into two groups!”
Dragon Slayer didn’t hesitate at this critical moment, quickly responding.
“I’ll take the two cute girls for you, and the two ‘potatoes’ for myself.”
“What ‘potatoes’?!” Wind Slash Ghost and Shating Iron Sword couldn’t help but droop their shoulders. Dragon Slayer’s speech sometimes became very strange, leaving them momentarily puzzled.
Even Tyr twitched his mouth, but he didn’t argue about this matter. He spoke to Arena and the Butterfly of Sunflowers.
“Stay close to me!”
“Yes!” Butterfly of Sunflowers answered first. Arena was once again a beat slower, but before she could speak, Tyr had already moved. Butterfly of Sunflowers immediately followed suit, the poor little elf casting a haste spell in a flurry to catch up.
Dragon Slayer remained as steady as a rock, not moving at all. The two potatoes behind him were sweating profusely, wondering if their leader intended to take on the Level 6 monster alone.
Boom!
The black iron cages suddenly loosened their restraints, releasing the creatures within.
Perhaps the academy intentionally starved the monsters, as they now drooled profusely. Upon seeing humans, their voracious appetite surpassed their anger!
“One last reminder!” Looking at the examinees on the square, terrified, Kaga said calmly.
“While our barrier cannot be penetrated from the outside, it can be crossed from the inside! However, once you step out of the barrier, we will consider you eliminated, unfit as a candidate.”
As Kaga spoke, many people had already fled from inside the barrier to the outside, saying things like, “This exam is terrifying! It’s basically murder!” “We came here to learn, not to die.”
“Anyone else?” Kaga paid no attention to the eliminated ones, asking absentmindedly. Despite the disappearance of thousands, most of the remaining examinees still harbored a desire to give it a try, with only a few feeling confident.
Kaga, with neither joy nor sorrow, adjusted his black-framed glasses and casually spoke.
“So let the slaughter begin.”
Roar!!
The eagerly awaited monsters, their eyes red with anticipation, roared as they charged towards the crowd upon hearing Kaga’s command.
The scene was like four black wolves charging into a flock of sheep. Everyone feared even a touch of the demonic aura, scrambling in panic. Their demeanor was far from the usual swaggering in front of mortals; they were even worse than half of the civilians in their behavior.
Tyr, on the other hand, led the two cute girls behind him and began to run for their lives. Cunningly, he even kicked away some weaker examinees without mercy when the monsters got too close. His ruthless demeanor made Butterfly of Sunflowers tremble with fear, afraid that she might be thrown out at any moment. Meanwhile, Arena emitted a sound of surprise, mimicking Tyr’s actions by using binding spells on some nearby examinees of lower levels and casually tossing them towards the monsters.
Kaga, who presided over the entire assessment, naturally took note of it. He calmly said to a white-clad staff member beside him.
“This participant with the black mask is impressive. Although his methods are not commendable, he can minimize danger to himself and his companions. He faces danger without fear and reacts faster than others by several beats. It’s fair to say he’s a genius. So, allow him to skip the rest of the assessment and enroll directly. As for the two girls beside him, if possible, take care of them. We wouldn’t want them to die due to some unexpected events during the assessment.”
“Yes,” the white-clad staff member responded calmly, their attitude devoid of joy or sorrow, almost like a robot.
Dragon Slayer, on the other hand, was eager to try. As she looked at the monsters approaching her, she wore a confident smile. Clenching her fists, the ground around Dragon Slayer collapsed by a centimeter. The cracked tiles made Wind Slash Ghost and Shating Iron Sword immediately step back, fearing they might be accidentally injured by Dragon Slayer in the next moment.
“Martial arts, soul integration!”
Blue qi surrounded Dragon Slayer’s body as if it were substantial. In the next moment, all the qi suddenly stopped flowing and swiftly converged towards her fist.
Boom boom boom!!
The compression of qi made the space around Dragon Slayer feel as if it was being squeezed, and the next moment, under the astonished gaze of everyone, Dragon Slayer struck out with the blue qi gathered on his fist, the terrifying momentum was deafening, even causing sixth-level demons to feel shocked!
Bang!
Roar!! The speed of the demon was fast, but evidently not faster than the force of Dragon Slayer’s punch, the blue light struck the demon, causing this huge monster to emit a painful roar!
At this moment, all the spectators who were only focused on escaping were stunned!
