Chapter 190: The Weak and Infirm’s Abode
Finally rid of the mole who had framed him three years ago, but Leon didn’t feel the satisfaction of vengeance. His emotions were rather complex at the moment.
Compared to the success of revenge, he felt more perplexed. Could someone really abandon their principles and beliefs just for the sake of being the perennial loser?
Victor becoming a lackey of the Empire might have had other reasons. But Leon had no way of knowing. After all, a corpse wouldn’t speak. Just like how the Empire had pinned the blame for their failed war and the mole on Leon, a “dead man”.
Of course, Leon wouldn’t regret killing Victor. Traitors must be dealt with. Letting him live posed threats not only to Leon but also to his master, Rebecca, and Martin.
Leon adjusted his demeanor slightly and returned the two handguns to Rebecca. One was used to execute Victor, while the other was the blank gun he had assembled at Rebecca’s house on his first day back in the Empire.
“I was wondering why I couldn’t find this gun. Turns out, it’s been with you all along,” Rebecca said.
Leon averted his gaze from Victor’s corpse, turned around, and chuckled wearily. “You didn’t seem at all worried about losing your own gun.”
“I thought I misplaced it somewhere again,” Rebecca said as she secured the handgun.
“You know, people like me and Martin, we’re such homebodies, our houses are always messy. Losing things is nothing unusual.”
Martin, standing aside, clutching his sore chest, attempted to defend himself. “Rebecca, my room is very clean, and I’m not a homebody. I just simply prefer not to go out.”
“Preferring not to go out is exactly what a homebody does, isn’t it? Then what else defines a homebody?” Rebecca argued convincingly.
Martin had no strength to argue back and silently closed his mouth. He held his chest, leaning on the dining table as he approached Victor’s corpse.
The former vice-captain lay in a pool of blood, lifeless. After a brief silence, Martin sighed. “Why did Victor help the Empire frame the captain…”
Leon shook his head slowly. “It’s meaningless to ponder the motives of a small pawn. It’s simpler to ask: why was the Empire so eager to kill me?”
Coming from a noble family, Martin quickly thought of a reason. “Threat to their power?”
Since graduating from the Dragon Slayer Academy, Leon had risen from a regular soldier in the Dragon Slayer Army to the legendary ‘Strongest Dragon Slayer’ in just a few years. Both in terms of strength and personal charm, Leon was worthy of that title.
Leon’s reputation grew in the civilian population, and he gained immense support and admiration within the Dragon Slayer Army.
Such a person was undoubtedly seen as a potential threat to the Empire’s power center. Leon had indeed considered this. Was his appearance seen as a thorn in their side, necessitating his removal to ensure the concentration and unity of power?
But this couldn’t explain the Empire’s cooperation with the Dragon race.
Or perhaps, these were two completely unrelated matters…
“I think the kid being targeted by the Empire isn’t just because of the ‘threat to their power,'” Teg’s voice came from behind.
Leon and the others turned to look at Teg, who leaned against the doorway with a katana in his arms.
“I’ve experienced things when I was young that made me fully realize the Empire’s strength and darkness. That’s why I often advised Leon to focus solely on fighting and not to meddle in politics. At the time, Leon’s understanding of power wasn’t enough to make the Empire eager to get rid of him, so there must be other reasons.”
After a pause, Teg added, “It might truly be related to the Dragon race. This war that has lasted for hundreds of years hides many secrets and conspiracies that we can’t fathom. Killing Victor, this small pawn, won’t stop the Empire from hunting down Leon. The road ahead of us is still long.”
The master’s words made the atmosphere in the room heavy. Indeed, killing a mole didn’t signify much. Victor was merely a manipulated puppet, and the real mastermind had yet to reveal themselves.
In order to kill Leon, they even dispatched a Dragon King like Constantine. What would their next move be? A stronger Dragon King? Or something else?
Leon didn’t know. The human empire that had stood for millennia on the vast land held profound secrets far beyond what he could perceive at the moment. He needed more time, deeper exploration, to unravel the layers of mist shrouding his vision.
But before that…
Leon looked at Rebecca and Martin.
“The Empire will soon realize we’ve taken out Victor, and the hunt for me will change from ‘traitorous betrayal’ to open bounty hunting. Martin, you should be relatively safe. No one knows you were with us tonight, and besides, your father can protect you,” Leon said.
“But… Rebecca… I’m sorry for dragging you into this mess. Once things cool down, Master and I will escort you out of the Empire to a safe place. Master, can you take Rebecca to your wife’s place?”
Teg raised an eyebrow and scratched his temple.
“Well… I guess so, but, you see, your master’s wife has gone back to her parents’ place, and I’m not that familiar with her family…”
“Master, you’ve been married for thirty years, but you’re not that familiar with your wife’s family…” Leon teased.
Teg’s face flushed. “What’s wrong with being married for thirty years? Does it mean we have to be very familiar after thirty years… Besides, we don’t visit often. Kids, don’t ask random questions.”
This time, Leon also felt a bit awkward. “Is that so… Well, that complicates things. How about letting Rebecca stay with Martin temporarily? At least it can ensure her safety for a while. After all, the Empire wouldn’t dare to barge into a noble’s house to search for people casually, right?”
Master nodded. “That’s a good idea. Martin, what do you think?”
“I have no objection. Rebecca can stay at my place for as long as she wants. I’ll prove to her that I’m not a homebody,” Martin said.
“Okay, then—”
“I object!”
The twin-tailed loli raised her hand high. “I appreciate you guys discussing my whereabouts, but have you considered my opinion as the person involved?”
All three turned their gaze to Rebecca.
Leon anticipated the crazy girl’s plan. “You’re not thinking of becoming fugitives with Master and me, are you?”
“Of course! Don’t forget, we’re the Weak and Infirm Combo! Without me, you guys would just be Weak and Infirm, how unflattering,” Rebecca retorted. Then, with a serious tone, she added, “And besides, isn’t a beautiful girl a staple in the team?”
Raising an eyebrow skeptically, Leon asked, “You… consider yourself a beautiful girl?”
“But I am a beautiful young lady! How could you say I’m not?”
To be fair, Rebecca’s appearance did fit the standard image of a beautiful young girl. With her distinct personality, perfectly toned legs, and signature twin-tails, she was the epitome of many people’s ideal type.
Unfortunately, her captain didn’t share that sentiment.
Of course, she knew that the dense straight guy wasn’t interested in her type. He had a thing for elegant beauties with long silver hair.
But that didn’t mean he could deny her status as a beautiful young lady!
Preferences are subjective, but being a beautiful young lady is an objective fact!
Leon didn’t continue dancing in Rebecca’s minefield and got serious. “But following us will be very dangerous. Are you sure you’ve thought this through?”
“I’ve already told you before, Captain, defying the Empire isn’t the most dangerous thing; the most dangerous thing is loafing around waiting to die with the patrol teams,” Rebecca firmly stated. “So, it’s settled. You guys can’t shake me off.”
In truth, Leon had thought Rebecca might stay, but he hadn’t expected her to be so determined. Well, when the crazy girl made up her mind, even Leon couldn’t change it.
“Um… Captain,” Martin said softly from the side.
Leon was taken aback and quickly blurted out, “You, young man, stay at home and don’t get involved.”
It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Martin’s abilities; he just didn’t want to risk another talented junior. Besides, Martin was different from Rebecca.
Rebecca had no parents, no family, while Martin came from a noble family. His future might not be bright, but at least he wouldn’t have to worry about his basic needs. Leon couldn’t ruin Martin’s life just because of himself.
“No, no, no, I won’t cause any trouble for you, Captain,” Martin immediately explained.
“I just thought, if I stay at home, I can help gather information and intelligence from within the Empire. Don’t worry, I know my limits, and I know how to gather information discreetly.”
Leon crossed his arms, furrowing his brows in thought. Seeing no immediate response from Leon, Martin added, “Captain, let me contribute as well.”
Rebecca chimed in, supporting Martin. “Yes, Captain, Martin has been down since your incident. Now that you’re back, he finally has something to look forward to. You can’t just douse his fighting spirit with cold water.”
After some consideration, it seemed like agreeing to Martin was the only option.
Leon sighed. “Fine, but you must gather information while ensuring your own safety, understood?”
Martin’s eyes lit up. “Yes, Captain!”
Clap!
Rebecca applauded. “Great! Then our group can be called ‘The Weak and Infirm’s Abode’!”
“I’ll say it again, I’m not a homebody!” Martin protested futilely.
Rebecca made a face at him. “Homebody in denial~ Homebody in denial~”
But at this moment, Teg, who had remained silent, suddenly spoke up. “Leon, you can’t stay in the Empire.”
