Chapter 191: Never Left
Upon hearing this, before Leon could even ask anything, Rebecca blurted out, “Captain, why can’t you stay in the Empire, Dad?”
“After Victor’s death, the Empire will definitely intensify its pursuit of Leon. Within three days, his wanted posters will cover every street and alley in the Empire, and the search will be much more intense than when I was in the Empire myself,” Teg analyzed slowly.
“Continuing to let him stay here would only increase his risk. And most importantly, since we want to uncover what kind of conspiracy is brewing between the Empire and the Dragon Clan, we can’t just investigate within the Empire. We need someone to go to the Dragon’s kingdom and find the other half of the answers.”
“And this person must be someone trusted by the Dragon Clan and quite familiar with them.”
Trusted by the Dragon Clan, familiar with the Dragon Clan…
Teg and Rebecca both looked at Leon involuntarily.
Leon blinked, “Do I look like I’m trusted by the Dragon Clan…”
“You’re married to a dragon and have kids with them, and you still doubt it?” Rebecca asked.
Martin was shocked, “Wait, wait, wait, Captain got married to a dragon and had children? When did this happen? Why didn’t I know? And isn’t there reproductive isolation between humans and dragons?”
“Oh, I forgot to tell you this afternoon, not only did the Captain have children with a dragon, but it’s three in one lifetime!” Rebecca held up three fingers.
“The-three?! Captain, this number will incur fines in the Empire!” Leon silently covered his face.
He really wanted to escape, but he couldn’t. He thought he would only face this kind of social death torment when he was with Rosvitha. How come even in a long-distance relationship, he couldn’t get away from it!
“Cough cough… Since everyone seems to think highly of your popularity among the Dragon Clan, the important task of infiltrating behind enemy lines and gathering intelligence has been entrusted to you, my dear disciple,” Teg said seriously.
“Master, where did you see that everyone thinks highly of my popularity among the Dragon Clan? We haven’t even discussed this yet!” Leon retorted.
“Alright then, let’s vote. All in favor of Leon returning to the Dragon Clan to gather intelligence, please breathe,” Teg proposed.
Martin didn’t catch on.
But Rebecca had already stood in front of Leon and blew air onto his face vigorously.
“OK, four to one, unanimous decision.”
Four to one?
Oh~~ Victor counts too, right?
Master always covers all bases like this, not missing any details.
“Master… what you said does make sense, but once I leave here, can you really handle the Empire without me?” Leon questioned.
“Of course, the Empire’s main target is you. If they find out you’ve left the Empire, they won’t allocate too much manpower and resources to deal with us. And as you’re with the Dragon Clan, their claws can’t reach you, they can only try to solve you like they dispatched Constantine. But you’ve also taught them a vivid lesson, proving that the strongest dragon slayer isn’t just a boast,” Teg expressed confidence in his disciple’s abilities.
After all, after hundreds of years, producing such a super SSR, a bit of strength is no big deal, right?
“Anyway, if you return to the Silver Dragon, whether it’s to ensure your own safety or to investigate intelligence, it will be more efficient than staying with us in the Empire,” Teg concluded.
“I agree with Dad’s idea,” Rebecca said.
“I also agree with Mr. Teg,” Martin echoed.
Leon pursed his lips, momentarily unsure of what to decide. Teg, observing his disciple’s reaction, realized that his earlier words hadn’t hit the mark, and hadn’t quite touched this stubborn kid’s heart. Alright then, if you’re so obstinate, don’t blame me for being ruthless.
“Besides… you can reunite with your wife,” Teg added.
Leon: ?
“Is that really the point here? Am I that kind of person, Rebecca, am I?”
“If I had such a beautiful wife, I’d be eager to go home too, Captain, don’t hide it,” Rebecca teased.
“You!… Martin, do I seem like the type to prioritize romance over friendship?”
Martin pondered seriously for a moment before replying, “Captain, you’re indeed at the age where you start missing your wife, it’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
“Nonsense! Absurd! I, Leon Casmode, am not the type to abandon my teammates just to see my wife. Even if the Empire is hunting me down, even if wanted posters cover every street and alley, I will never leave you all!”
“Tonight, I’ll escort you out of the city.”
“Alright, thank you, Master!”
…
Originally, the plan was to lay low for a while before sending Leon out of the city. But considering the level of his disciple’s wanted status might far exceed the highest level of red, they couldn’t avoid the limelight for long.
So, they decided to act swiftly and send Leon away tonight, before the Empire realized Victor had been taken care of. Martin couldn’t show his face, so he made his way back to the city through a side path. Leon, Teg, and Rebecca proceeded to the gates of the Empire.
It was late at night, and the rain was pouring down heavily, with no merchant caravans or wagons passing by for Leon to hide in.
Moreover, due to the recent battle at the church, the Empire had already discovered Leon’s whereabouts. They would undoubtedly strengthen the patrols at the city gates, making it risky for Leon to hide in a carriage even if one was available.
Similarly, the towering city walls were impossible to climb over, and if they took the long route around, it would take at least a day and a night.
“It must have cost a fortune to build such tall city walls,” Rebecca remarked, her focus always strange.
The three of them crouched on the rooftop of a low building, observing the situation at the city gate. Several patrol teams had been added, and cages had been placed on either side of the gate containing dangerous beasts.
“Long-tailed demon apes,” Rebecca immediately recognized the dangerous species in the cages.
“They’re very intelligent monsters, more adept at teamwork than ordinary dangerous species, and their physical strength and endurance are remarkable.”
“Kid, Rebecca and I will cause a commotion at the city gate later. You slip out during the chaos,” Teg said. “But they’ll definitely send people to hunt you down again. Are you sure you can escape?”
Leon’s expression turned serious. “There shouldn’t be a problem. Even if I can’t escape, I can circle back.”
Teg sighed. “Don’t be so casual about it, kid. If you can’t escape and end up back in the Empire, it’ll be nearly impossible for you to get out again. We only have this one chance tonight.”
Leon bit his lip, pondered for a moment, then nodded. “I understand, Master.”
“By the way, we also need to exchange information and intelligence at regular intervals. Any thoughts on that?” Teg asked.
After thinking for a moment, Leon said, “How about every three months, I go to the mountain cave where you used to hide, Master?”
“Sounds good.”
It was surprising that even at this final stage, his long-distance wife was still playing a role.
Once the time for exchanging information was set, Teg said, “Rebecca, fire a few shots to get their attention.”
“No problem, Dad.”
The wild loli loaded her dual pistols, stood on the rooftop of the low building, and fired several shots into the sky covered by dark clouds. The sound of gunfire and flashes immediately caught the attention of the gate guards.
“It’s the red-listed criminal Rebecca Clement! Capture her!”
Hearing the guards shout, Rebecca sneered, “Just a few days ago, I was your colleague, and now I’m a red-listed criminal. Hmph, I told you, being stuck in a patrol team waiting for death is the most dangerous thing!”
Teg drew his sword and turned back to Leon. “Take care, kid.”
“You too, Master. And Rebecca, make sure to protect yourself.”
“Got it, Captain, you just go find your wife!”
Leon smiled helplessly and didn’t argue further. After a round of gunfire, Teg and Rebecca jumped down from the low building and engaged with the patrol team in combat. Magic clashed, blades flashed, bullets flew, and chaos quickly ensued.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Leon circled around the low building and slowly made his way toward the city gate. At this moment, the massive gate was tightly closed, requiring at least four people to cooperate to open it.
However, there was a special passage prepared specifically for royal members nearby. Leon couldn’t open the main gate, so he had to slip out through the special passage.
Now, at the entrance of the special passage, there were still two guards. Taking them down wasn’t difficult, but the challenge lay in swiftly evacuating after dealing with them, without wasting a single moment.
Leon prepared himself and slowly approached the entrance of the special passage. The two guards, holding long swords and standard-issue pistols at their waists, were focused on the chaotic battlefield ahead and didn’t notice Leon sneaking up on them.
Bowing his body and moving silently, Leon gradually approached from the side and rear. When he was close enough, Leon quickly struck, delivering a chop to the back of one guard’s neck, causing him to faint instantly.
The other guard reacted swiftly, raising his sword to strike at Leon.
If you think you’re naive, then consider the fact that there was once an Imperial security guard who attempted to solo the strongest dragon slayer, General Leon, with a short sword.
Leon easily disarmed the guard and, undeterred, the guard drew his pistol. But before he could aim, Leon swiftly kicked him to the ground.
After quickly dispatching the guards, Leon took a final glance at his master and Rebecca on the battlefield.
“Take care.”
With that, Leon swiftly turned around and used a technique to blast open the security door of the special passage. He took large strides and dashed out of the Empire’s encirclement.
The guards entangled with Teg and Rebecca also heard the commotion. When they turned to look, Leon was already far away.
“It’s Casmode! Quick, pursue him! Release the long-tailed demon apes, we must catch up to him!”
With that command, the cages opened, and the two demon apes, excitedly howling, chased after Leon.
Despite the pouring rain and the muddy ground underfoot, severely slowing down Leon’s pace, the long-tailed demon apes, being beasts, had no trouble running on all fours.
The distance between the two sides was getting closer and closer. The howling of the demon monkeys became more piercing, as if mocking the prey that was about to fall into their hands.
Leon glanced back at the two monkeys as he ran, then raised his right hand, faint lightning flickering in his palm.
The sky, covered with dense clouds, began to churn. Thunder rumbled, and in the next moment, a thick bolt of lightning struck down from the clouds, directly splitting the two demon monkeys into halves.
After this move, Leon’s footsteps paused for a beat. “Tch, the accumulation of magic power is still too slow…” He muttered, quickly adjusting his pace and running towards the forest ahead.
Passing through the forest ahead, leaping over several mountains, and crossing a desert, he would reach the border between the human territory and the dragon clan’s territory.
It sounded simple, but in reality, with human speed, even for Leon, it would take at least half a month of non-stop travel just to reach there. And that was just leaving human territory; returning to the Silver Dragon clan would take at least a dozen more days.
Leon calculated the time needed for the journey and ran to a tree, leaning against it, wiping the rain off his face.
“Suddenly feeling a bit envious of those dragons with wings… they can just fly.” The Silver Dragon clan, known for their speed, could complete this long journey in just three hours.
After a brief complaint, Leon stepped forward to continue his journey. However, at that moment, the piercing howl of the demon monkeys came from all directions.
Leon’s heart tightened. “Looks like the empire was prepared long ago…” The rustling of leaves and creaking of tree trunks filled the air.
Leon remained vigilant, observing his surroundings to avoid being ambushed by those cunning and dangerous creatures.
The chilling howls echoed in the rain curtain. The monsters weren’t eager to attack; instead, they seemed intent on slowly wearing down Leon’s resolve.
Leon attempted to gather magic power, but the lightning in his hand flickered only twice before extinguishing.
“Roar!!”
It seemed the creatures realized their prey could no longer use magic. A long-tailed demon monkey, like a ghost, suddenly lunged at Leon from the flank.
Leon reacted swiftly; as the creature pounced, he bent his knees and waist, delivering a powerful punch straight to the monkey’s abdomen.
The demon monkey howled in pain, and seizing the opportunity, Leon grabbed its tail with both hands while simultaneously stomping on and breaking its leg. The monkey writhed on the ground in agony, its cries attracting more of its kind.
They descended around Leon like raindrops, encircling him tightly. Leon estimated at least forty of them.
“Darn it, walk right into a monkey’s nest.”
Unlike other dangerous creatures, the long-tailed demon monkeys understood teamwork and tactics better. Leon was well aware of this, so he had no intention of getting into a prolonged battle with them.
Besides, the imperial pursuers would soon catch up; he couldn’t afford a drawn-out fight here. He had to escape as soon as possible.
Observing the monkeys, Leon locked his gaze on one of them. In the next moment, he planted his right foot on the ground, splashing mud and rainwater, and dashed toward the chosen monkey.
Before the monkeys could react, Leon was upon them.
“Ahoo!! Roar!”
“Ahoo!!”
The monstrous cries continued incessantly, expressing excitement, pain, pride, threat, intimidation… Leon relied solely on his martial arts to wreak havoc among the beasts.
After breaking through a gap, Leon dashed toward it. The demon monkeys scattered, darting through the forest, pursuing Leon from all directions. This wasn’t just a simple chase; the monkeys were gradually wearing down Leon’s stamina.
“Darn it… This is getting troublesome.”
Leon realized the tactical prowess of the demon monkeys but had no effective countermeasure. After breaking through three encirclements in succession, Leon took refuge under a giant tree. He slowly sat down against the trunk, panting heavily.
Closing his eyes, Leon quietly restored his strength. The heavy rain washed over his face, drenching him thoroughly. Part of his body’s energy was being used to maintain body temperature, causing his stamina to deplete rapidly.
Leon lifted his cold hand, brushing through his rain-soaked bangs. Leaning against the tree trunk, he gazed at the densely overcast sky. He hadn’t even left the outskirts of the empire, yet his stamina was already struggling to keep up.
Meanwhile, the howls of the demon monkeys echoed again in the forest, drawing nearer and nearer…
He glanced towards the distant imperial walls. “Should I go back…”
The road to the dragon clan was too distant and perilous. Yet, if he turned back now, he could return to the empire within an hour, reuniting with his master and Rebecca.
Even if he could only investigate the conspiracy within the empire, it would only mean a slower efficiency, right…
Going back… would be easy.
But then, he might never see Noia Muen and his little daughter again. He might never see…
“Roar!—”
Swoosh swoosh swoosh—
Several demon monkeys landed around Leon. They eyed their prey, nearly exhausted, and couldn’t help but let out triumphant cries.
Leon gritted his teeth, using the tree trunk for support as he slowly stood up. But the muddy ground caused him to slip, and he fell back down.
“Roar! Roar! Wuuu~~~”
The demon monkeys pounded their chests, making strange noises, as if mocking Leon. The eyes of the Dragon Slayer lost their last hint of warmth. He slowly stood up again, stepping towards the foolhardy monkey.
Half an hour later, the body of the long-tailed demon monkey almost filled the clearing. Leon, covered in blood, slumped against the tree, feeling even breathing was a struggle.
In the distance, the voices of imperial soldiers gradually approached. Leon closed his eyes. In his brief yet illustrious twenty-three years of life, he had never backed down after deciding on something. But this time, the long journey ahead and the current danger filled him with dread.
The rain continued to fall, seemingly about to extinguish the faint flame that had led Leon to this point. His head leaned against the rough tree trunk, letting the cold rain wash over his face.
But the next moment, the rain suddenly stopped. Yet, the sound of rain persisted. Leon was taken aback, slowly opening his eyes.
The silver-haired beauty stood quietly in front of him, her long dress dampened by the rain, yet she used her dragon wings to shield him from the storm. They gazed at each other, one tall and one short, just like many times before.
Leon’s eyes, devoid of any light, flickered with a glimmer of hope once again. The brilliant silver radiance reflected in his pitch-black pupils.
“You… didn’t go back?” he asked.
“No, I never left,” she replied.
“Rosvitha…”
“Let’s go home, Leon.”
