Chapter 43: I’m Not Good at Fighting
Leon had a simple plan: to infiltrate the Red Flame Dragon Clan while they were preoccupied with internal turmoil and external pressure, and find Constantine’s confidant.
At that moment, the confidant, struggling amidst chaos, would never have imagined that four months later, the person who had killed his boss would still be haunting him.
The key was to catch him off guard.
Rosvitha had no objections to Leon’s chosen timing for infiltration. However, the method of infiltration required more consideration.
“Let Shirley transport me to the vicinity of the Red Flame Dragon Clan’s territory, and I’ll go in alone,” Leon proposed.
Rosvitha thought for a moment and shook her head. “That won’t work.”
“Why not?”
“Firstly, you intend to go to the Red Flame Dragon Clan to find that confidant to figure out which other Dragon Kings are collaborating with the Human Empire. But in the eyes of Shirley or my other clan members, it would be very strange and incongruous for a Silver Dragon Prince to sneak into the territory of the defeated dragon clan alone,” Rosvitha explained slowly, analyzing the situation for Leon.
“Secondly, Shirley would never allow the Silver Dragon Prince to enter enemy territory alone. Even if you asked her to wait outside, she would follow you. My other subordinates would likely do the same.”
“And considering the confidant you’re looking for knows about Constantine’s collusion with the Empire, he likely knows your human identity as well. No matter what method you use to interrogate him, there’s a chance he might reveal your identity. If Shirley is by your side, our long-held secret would be exposed, wouldn’t it?”
Rosvitha’s argument made sense.
Since Constantine was able to complain about cooperating with the Empire in front of that confidant initially, it’s highly likely—no, it’s absolutely certain—that the confidant already knows Leon’s identity.
Therefore, if Leon were to ask Shirley or other clan members to take him to the Red Flame Dragon Clan, the probability of exposing his identity would significantly increase.
Leon needs the identity of “Silver Dragon Prince” as cover, allowing him to continue his investigation within the dragon clan, collaborate with his master from within, and together uncover the Empire’s conspiracy.
On the other hand, the “false” family he and Rosvitha have been building is becoming more and more perfect.
Noia, Muen, and Little Light are all proud of Leon. In their eyes, Leon is the best father in the world. But if suddenly they were told that their admired father is actually an outsider, a human… the consequences would be unpredictable.
Perhaps someone as intelligent as Noia wouldn’t mind as long as her father still loves her and she still loves him. Muen and Little Light would probably feel the same way. But—
If things were to take a turn for the worse, how would Leon face it?
It’s a gamble that Leon dares not make. All he can do is continue to keep this secret hidden with Rosvitha.
Seeing Leon’s contemplative expression, Rosvitha knew he understood her meaning and had considered all possibilities.
“So, how should I go to the Red Flame Dragon Clan?” Leon asked.
The territories of different dragon clans are very far apart, and even though General Leon can transform, he is ultimately a land creature who walks on two legs.
Without wings or any means of transportation, it would take Leon several months to walk from the Silver Dragon Temple to the Red Flame Dragon Clan.
By that time, not only would Constantine’s confidant likely be unreachable, but the entire Red Flame Dragon Clan might have been wiped out in the flames of revenge from other major tribes.
Moreover, reaching the Red Flame Dragon Clan is just the first step; the most important thing is not to arouse suspicion among those accompanying Leon.
In this regard, Rosvitha has a good solution.
“I’ll go with you,” she said.
Leon was stunned.
Clearly, he hadn’t expected Rosvitha to suggest that.
“The Silver Dragon Queen and her husband sneaking into the territory of a defeated dragon clan together…”
Leon rubbed his chin, feeling a chill run down his spine. “That sounds even more suspicious than me going alone.”
Rosvitha shrugged. “Just say we’re inspecting the border. That excuse has always been quite useful.”
The Queen’s words were true. Although border inspections were often joked about by her sister, Isabella, as “an excuse for a date at work,” they did provide cover for some more “private” matters. Like a date. Or, in this case, infiltrating enemy territory.
“If Shirley and the others were to escort you, it would easily expose your identity. So, in this situation, it’s safest for me to go with you,” Rosvitha explained.
“You’re right. But… I don’t quite understand,” Leon said, looking up at her, meeting her silver eyes, and biting his lip.
“This is undoubtedly very dangerous, and even if we step back, it’s a matter between me, my master, and the Empire. The conflict between the Red Flame Dragon Clan and your Silver Dragon Clan is over; you don’t need to take this risk with me…”
Oh, the Queen understands now. The scoundrel still has a conscience and is considering her safety.
Rosvitha felt a small sense of satisfaction in her heart, but she didn’t show it. She decided to tease him a bit more, to see if she could get a more straightforward answer from the scoundrel’s mouth.
“So, what are we going to do? If you expose your identity, won’t our family be torn apart?” The Queen pretended to be distressed, sighing repeatedly.
“I know it’s very dangerous, and I just gave birth four months ago, so my strength hasn’t fully recovered yet. If I get into a conflict with the remnants of the Red Flame Dragon Clan, I might get injured, or worse… I might not come back at all, sob…”
It was all fake. After giving birth, the bodies and strength of dragons quickly return to normal levels. After all, being a wild race accustomed to fighting and competing for territory, their fierce nature is ingrained in their DNA. She was just trying to scare the scoundrel, to see if he would show some genuine concern or something.
“Can’t come back… Is it really that exaggerated?” Leon was indeed somewhat frightened by her words.
“Of course it is! You, Casmode, are a dragon-slaying hero, fearless and brave. Anyone who comes near you will be met with lightning bolts. Unlike me, who is not good at fighting and is weak in body. If it weren’t for this family, for our daughter, I wouldn’t want to take this risk with you,” Rosvitha said, emphasizing her point.
She looked pitiful and delicate, as if a gust of wind could blow her fragile body away. If she held a handkerchief in her hand, she would truly be a delicate beauty worthy of pity.
Leon wasn’t sure if she was pretending or if it was genuine, but the idea of becoming weaker after pregnancy and childbirth didn’t sound like a falsehood.
He licked his dry lips and hesitated, standing up and awkwardly pushing her shoulder.
“Alright, alright… We can figure something else out. You don’t have to come with me,” Leon said.
“Something else? Is there another way? At this point, I can only accompany you,” Rosvitha replied, with one hand against her forehead, feigning a helpless look. But from Leon’s angle, he couldn’t see the wild grin spreading across the Queen’s face.
“But… but what if you get hurt?” Leon said, using a euphemism. In the context of dragon conflicts, getting “hurt” was far from simple.
“Hmph, now you’re concerned about me? Where’s this care been all this time?” The Queen couldn’t resist indulging in her playfulness.
“I… I…” Leon stuttered.
“What about you?” Rosvitha prompted.
“I’m not… I’m just… worried that our daughters will be concerned,” Leon blurted out, resorting to the same old trick.
Trying to pull the same trick twice? Ha, Casmode, today you’ll learn that you can’t use the same move on a Dragon Queen twice!
“Okay, Leon, so you don’t care about me at all. You’re just… just pretending to care, and here I am, thinking of risking my life to help you find your enemy. Sob… I can’t live like this anymore! I can’t! I’ll pack my things and go to my sister’s house tomorrow—uh!”
Leon quickly covered her mouth. If she kept rambling, they might end up discussing divorce. With him standing and Rosvitha sitting, his natural reaction brought her face close to his abdomen.
Looking down at her, Leon blushed as she gazed back at him with her beautiful eyes. After a brief moment of eye contact, Leon swallowed nervously and said, “Alright… I… I’m just worried about you getting into trouble, okay?
Although it does have something to do with our daughters… it’s not just that. I’m genuinely worried about you and don’t want to see anything happen to you. If something were to happen to you, I would feel… guilty.”
After some consideration, Leon decided to use the word “guilty.” While emotions like “sadness” or “regret” would also fit his character, they might have seemed too ambiguous for him and Rosvitha in their current situation.
So, after weighing his options, he settled on “guilty.” After all, she could have stayed safely at home as the Silver Dragon Queen, without risking herself to help Leon. If she got hurt trying to help him, Leon would truly feel guilty.
Listening to Leon’s words and feeling the tone behind them, Rosvitha was satisfied. She removed his hand from her mouth but kept her cheek against his waist, even leaning slightly towards him.
Not overly reliant, just testing the waters by leaning against him.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of myself,” Rosvitha said. “As for why I’m helping you, there’s nothing special about it. It’s only natural for a wife to help her husband, isn’t it?”
Leon lowered his head, his hand that had just covered her mouth still lingering. With courage, he gently stroked Rosvitha’s warm and soft cheek with the back of his hand.
To his surprise, she didn’t resist or stop him; she simply allowed his caress.
Leon lowered his gaze, his tone deepening. “You’re getting too into the act, Rosvitha.”
She didn’t reply, only feeling the firmness of Leon’s hand and slowly closing her eyes.
Despite their happy confessions, they still tease each other. 🤣
Even Leon is now reluctant in exposing his false identity, mainly because of his daughters. I wonder if the daughters will ask him to transform into a dragon sooner or later. Perhaps using magic to transform at least once.
Yeah, “act”. Right.
Imagine if the reason why the empire attacked the Silver Dragon Sanctuary was because a red dragon clan member got rejected by Rosvitha.
How would she “act” then? Because she would most likely not care at all. 🤣
