Chapter 78: I am a security guard

Everyone instantly fell silent, pressing tightly against the underside of the carriage.

The merchant caravan halted before the Empire’s gates for the routine inspection.

Of course, the “inspection” was nothing more than a glance. As long as no suspicious or dangerous items were spotted, everyone was allowed to pass through.

The guards’ lax attitude wasn’t just a matter of tradition; they also relied heavily on the strength of the Empire itself.

As the captain had said earlier, ever since Leon disappeared, no one dared stir up trouble in the Empire.

As the most powerful nation among the human realms, people were grateful just to have the opportunity to trade here, let alone cause trouble.

Once the inspection ended, Leon and his daughters successfully snuck into the Empire along with the merchant caravan.

After traveling a few streets and ensuring no patrols were nearby, they slipped out from underneath the carriage and ducked into a narrow alleyway.

Leon stood at the mouth of the alley, pressing against the wall and peeking out cautiously in both directions. No one was watching, and they hadn’t drawn any attention.

Turning back, Leon started discussing the next steps with his daughters.

He said, “The intel from the informant didn’t specify the exact location of the dragon scales, only that they’re hidden in a secret fortress somewhere in the royal city.”

Noa said, “If we want to find the scales, we’re going to need to put in some more effort.”

Leon nodded. He’d known from the start it wouldn’t be easy to find the Heart Scales.

The Empire wouldn’t have gathered such things without a reason.

Heart Scales were essential ‘safety mechanisms’ for dragons, so what would humans do with them? The possibilities were endless.

With such precious items in their possession, the Empire was bound to keep them under heavy secrecy.

The fact that Noa’s mysterious informant had even learned the Empire was collecting Heart Scales was already quite impressive. If she also knew their exact location, then the Empire’s security departments would have some serious issues.

Their enemy wasn’t stupid. Getting past the guards was just the first step. The real challenge was yet to come.

“I’ve got two plans,” Leon said.

“First, we split into pairs and start searching near the royal city and inside it until we find where the scales are kept.”

“Second, we kidnap a relevant official and interrogate them for the information we need.”

“The first plan is relatively safer, but it’ll take more time; the second plan is faster but much riskier.”

“The second method can get the hiding place of the dragon scales faster, but the risk will also increase.”

“My suggestion is that we start by searching, and if we don’t find anything within a short time, we take the risk and kidnap someone. What do you think?”

The three sisters exchanged glances and then nodded in agreement. They had no objections to their dad’s plan.

“Alright, let’s decide on the pairs.”

Leon said, “Noa and Aurora, you’re together. I’ll go with Moon. Sound good?”

Moon’s large, bright eyes sparkled with excitement. “Am I going on a secret mission with Daddy?”

“Yep, are you happy?” Leon asked with a smile.

“Super happy!” If their tails weren’t hidden for the infiltration, Moon would’ve been wagging hers high in the air right now.

Noa gently poked her sister’s cheek. “Alright, little tagalong, remember to behave once we split up. Don’t wander off or cause trouble.”

Hmph, you’re still treating me like a kid,” Moon pouted.

Noa affectionately ruffled her little sister’s hair. “You’ll always be a kid around this guy.”

Hmph~

After finalizing the initial plan, Leon reminded them, “If you run into any emergencies, avoid fighting if possible. Try not to use magic. Our mission here is the Heart Scales.”

Hearing magic mentioned, Aurora suddenly remembered something.

“Oh, right, Sis, if you have to use magic, try to stick to just one element. Don’t use two at the same time. Dual awakening is extremely rare, especially when lightning and fire are together. If there are still people in the royal city who remember Mom and Dad from back then, they could easily connect the dots and figure out who we are.”

Moon nodded earnestly. “Got it, I understand.”

“Alright, let’s begin. Whether we find the Heart Scales or not, we’ll meet back here in three days.” Leon said.

“Got it.”

Noa and Aurora set off first.

Leon and Moon slipped into a side street, taking a more discreet route.

Noa and her sisters had never been in the Empire before, and for the past twenty years, they had deliberately avoided any contact with the Empire’s Dragon-Slayer Army.

As a result, no one inside the Empire should recognize them, so they could walk the streets without disguises.

But General Leon? He was a top-level fugitive from twenty years ago, having fallen from a hero who slayed dragons to a human traitor. His notoriety was the stuff of legend, and his story had probably even made its way into textbooks by now.

Even after two decades, there was still a risk of someone recognizing him, so it was safer to stick to the back alleys as much as possible.

“Dad, are we going straight to the royal city now?” Moon asked as she walked beside Leon.

“Let’s wait until it gets dark. Unlike Noa’s group, we can’t walk around in broad daylight. Nightfall will be our best cover.”

“Oh, okay!”

One of the advantages of splitting up was that his daughters didn’t all have to move as cautiously as Leon did.

Noa and Aurora, who hadn’t shown themselves in the Empire, could move much more freely.

But having three people together would inevitably draw attention, which was why Leon had chosen to split into pairs, so they could watch out for each other more easily.

Leon and Moon circled the narrow streets and climbed up to the rooftop of an abandoned clock tower. From there, they could see the royal city in the distance.

“Now, we just wait for nightfall,” Leon said, gazing at the grand and gleaming structures. Who knows what kind of monstrous beasts lie hidden beneath that magnificent exterior?
