The Cannon Fodder Turns His Sister Into A Soaring Phoenix C275

Chapter 275: Destiny

In the blink of an eye, it was late February, and the weather was gradually warming up, with specks of new green emerging in the mountains and forests.

On the old forest trail of Yuxu Mountain, Feng Yudie, clad in white, trod upon the weather-beaten stone steps, heading towards the depths of the mountain forest.

Three years ago, Immortal Tai Xu passed away here, prompting her to bid farewell to this place she had called home for fourteen years. Following a simple map and Xiao Tian’s guidance, she rode a pony towards the Xuanxing Sect.

As she ascended the mountain, she glimpsed a sapling she had planted three years ago, now grown into a sturdy tree capable of weathering storms. She also noticed the small tree where her master had measured her height annually, using a knife to mark her growth on the bark.

Approaching the apricot tree, Feng Yudie gently traced the knife marks on the bark with her jade-like fingers, feeling a deep sense of connection while reflecting on the changes that time brought.

Three years might seem fleeting, especially for a cultivator, yet it was ample time for a fragile sapling to mature into a tree that could withstand harsh conditions and provide shelter for birds.

Resting her forehead against the tree trunk, she closed her eyes, reminiscing about the moments shared with her master, a hint of melancholy crossing her lips.

A gentle breeze tousled her silver-white hair, accentuating the ethereal quality inherent to Feng Yudie. Pei Lianxue, somewhat surprised, was drawn to Feng Yudie’s emotions, despite her usual annoyance with her carefree demeanor. With a touch of compassion, she offered, “Would you like me to measure it for you?”

Startled by Pei Lianxue’s voice, Feng Yudie’s eyes snapped open, momentarily forgetting her master.

Junior Sister Pei cares about me! She thought excitedly.

Turning to Pei, she winked and jokingly replied, “I’d rather kiss you..”

Ye Anping, who had remained silent, interrupted, “It’s getting late. Let’s head up the mountain.”

Undeterred, Feng Yudie playfully puckered her lips, aiming for Pei Lianxue’s cheek.

Pei Lianxue, raising an eyebrow in disdain, instinctively pushed her away, inadvertently falling into her playful trap. With a chirp, Feng Yudie kissed Pei’s hand before retracting.

“Kissed Junior Sister Pei’s hand, hehe,” She chuckled.

Pei Lianxue’s expression showed clear disgust as she rubbed her hand against a nearby tree. Ye Anping frowned slightly but remained silent, realizing they were here to pay respects today.

“Let’s go,” He said simply.

“Alrighty then, hehe…” Replied Feng Yudie, undeterred.

After about fifteen minutes along the mountain path, the group emerged from the woods onto a cliff at the summit with expansive views. An earthen mound stood proudly on the cliff’s edge, its tombstone facing the grandeur of the mountains beyond. Inscribed upon it were a few lines detailing the title and years of birth and death.

Beside it, a petite girl dressed in simple linen diligently swept away the droppings left by forest creatures near some of the tombstones.

As footsteps approached, the girl tensed, turning to look. Upon spotting Feng Yudie’s distinctive silver hair, her expression transformed from caution to elation, tinged with disbelief.

“Sister Feng!” She exclaimed.

Feng Yudie squinted, as if uncertain and asked, “Could it be Xiao Qiu?”

“It’s me!” The girl confirmed.

Dropping her broom, Xiao Qiu hurried towards Feng Yudie, who caught her in a welcoming embrace and spun her around.

Observing from behind, Ye Anping discerned that Xiao Qiu was an ordinary girl without spiritual aptitude, and he deduced her identity – likely a local girl who had often played with Feng Yudie in childhood.

“Sister Feng, you said you’d return every year when you left! It’s been three years!” Xiao Qiu exclaimed.

“Well… I say that every year, but things come up,” Feng Yudie explained.

Glancing at Xiao Qiu, Feng Yudie couldn’t help but marvel at how much she had changed in three years. She recalled leaving when Xiao Qiu was half a head shorter than her, yet now, she barely reached her chin, having grown significantly taller.

“Sister Feng, it’s been three years; why do you look like you haven’t changed?” Xiao Qiu wondered.

“I’m a cultivator, so slow growth is normal,” Feng Yudie replied before promptly introducing Xiao Qiu to Pei Lianxue and Ye Anping, fellow disciples of the Xuanxing Sect.

Xiao Qiu eyed Pei Lianxue with a hint of envy but blushed shyly upon seeing Ye Anping. She bowed respectfully.

“Nice to meet you, esteemed immortals,” She greeted.

Ye Anping returned the courtesy before reminding Feng Yudie, “Senior Sister Feng, it’s time to pay your respects. The sun will set soon.”

“Oh, right! Of course!” Feng Yudie acknowledged, hurrying to fulfill her duty before dusk descended.

Feng Yudie snapped out of her reverie and hurried to the tombstone at the cliff’s edge. She retrieved Yuntian Chong’s eggs from her storage bag and placed them on the altar before the tombstone. Then, she knelt, clasping her hands together.

“Master, I’ve come to see you,” She murmured.

She glanced at the tombstone she had carved years ago, then looked back at Pei Lianxue and Ye Anping standing nearby. Concerned that Ye Anping might overhear, she leaned closer to the tombstone and whispered,

“Master, I’ve brought my future wife to see you. Her name is Pei Lianxue, and she’s a gentle and capable girl. If you were here, you’d surely like her.”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

“Isn’t she? Pei Junior Sister is both beautiful and talented. Don’t you think so?”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

Turning to Ye Anping, Feng Yudie continued, “And him! He’s Ye Anping, the young master of Hundred Lotus Sect…”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

“No, no, no… He hasn’t deceived a disciple. He’s different from the men you warned me about, Master. He’s been very kind to me, and he doesn’t want to marry me. He’s just genuinely kind to me…”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

Feng Yudie tilted her head and glanced back at Ye Anping. “Is he handsome? Well, my disciple thinks he’s okay. He’s better-looking than many men but not as handsome as Pei Lianxue…”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

“My disciple will be cautious and remember your teachings! But Ye Anping is different from other men. My disciple thinks he’s really good.”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

Suddenly, Feng Yudie looked aggrieved. “Ah… Let’s not talk about him anymore. He’s not good! Not good at all!”

Tai Xuzi: “…”

“Phew…”

Feng Yudie stood up, bowing respectfully. “I’ll come again next year so as not to disturb your rest, Master.”

Two tears welled in her eyes, and she raised her sleeves to wipe them away, unable to contain her emotions. She had so much more she wanted to share with her master, but she knew her words were merely thoughts of the past, unheard by her master.

After clearing her tears and composing herself, Feng Yudie picked up Yuntian Chong’s eggs and walked back towards Ye Anping, wearing a playful grin on her face.

“Alright! Master Ye, let’s go! I’m done…”

Ye Anping glanced at Feng Yudie’s teary eyes.

“Don’t you want to stay a little longer?” He asked.

“Master thinks I’m being annoying and wants me to leave,” She replied.

“You know you’re being annoying,” Ye Anping shook his head with a smile. Then, he looked at Xiao Qiu trembling beside him, sighed, and said, “Miss Xiao Qiu…”

“Ah…! Immortal, is there something wrong?” Xiao Qiu asked.

“Don’t dwell on it,” Ye Anping advised.

Xiao Qiu frowned in confusion and tilted her head. But Feng Yudie understood the implication. She flattened her lips and silently looked at Xiao Qiu before saying, “Xiao Qiu, I’ll take you back to the village. Have you ever experienced flying on a sword?”

Xiao Qiu’s eyes brightened. “Can I?”

“Of course!” Feng Yudie gave a thumbs up, summoned her flying sword, lifted Xiao Qiu, and flew into the sky. “Hold on tight~~”

Watching the two fly away, Ye Anping sighed softly. He didn’t want to meddle, but seeing the girl heading down a difficult path, he felt mixed emotions.

Xiao Qiu, a mortal without spiritual roots, could never ascend to immortality. It was best for Feng Yudie to sever ties with her now.

Originally, they had only saved her, but now they were entangled in her fate. And Xiao Qiu could not resist. If she became entangled in her fate, she would surely meet a tragic end.

“Sigh…”

Pei Lianxue, observing her senior brother’s expression, seemed to understand. She asked, “Should I go talk to her later?”

“No, she should know what to do. Our encounter with that girl was merely a passing one. It’s best if she decides for herself,” Ye Anping replied.

Pei Lianxue smiled and rested her head on Ye Anping’s shoulder. “Senior brother, if Sect Leader Ye hadn’t come to my village, would I have ended up like her? Wearing coarse clothes, dirty, ugly, and never meeting you in my life?”

“There are no ‘ifs’ in life,” Ye Anping said.

“Hmm…”

After a moment of silence, Ye Anping asked, “When I have time, I’ll take you back to see your parents one last time and formalize the engagement. The Pei family should be doing well now. Cultivating the elixir requires severing worldly ties, and you may have to completely forget about your mortal parents.”

“I’ve already prepared myself mentally for that. After marrying you, I’ll become a member of the Ye family, with no ties to the Pei family,” Pei Lianxue replied.

“Aren’t you reluctant? Many cultivators find it hard to sever worldly ties,” Ye Anping inquired.

“I’m fortunate. Sect Leader Ye and Lady Kong treat me like a daughter, and I have you, senior brother. I’ll also repay my parents’ kindness. They’re living a comfortable life now because of me,” Pei Lianxue explained.

“Hmm…”
