The Cannon Fodder Turns His Sister Into A Soaring Phoenix C276

Chapter 276: Brother Liang, in front of others and behind others

In early March, spring peeked out from behind the horizon. In the book pavilion at the main peak of the Hundred Lotus Sect, an oil lamp still flickered. A man dressed in the attire of a Hundred Lotus Sect elder turned his head to glance at the dawn streaming through the paper window, exhaling deeply.

“Hmm…”

Unbeknownst to him, dawn had arrived. Yet, piles of documents still cluttered the desk before him. He had been sitting there tirelessly for five days.

Liang Zhu pondered, Can he finally take a break and go fishing?

When he had followed Ye Anping here, he knew his position as an outsider and a wanted criminal cultivator was delicate, similar to that of indentured laborers.

Although Ye Anping had assured him that he and Liang Ahting could live peacefully in the Hundred Lotus Sect, a promise from an unrelated triplet was… Well, it was questionable.

Therefore, since arriving at the Hundred Lotus Sect, Liang Zhu has worked tirelessly, even performing menial tasks like serving tea. He had presented gifts to each elder according to their preferences, eagerly accepted any task, no matter how grueling, and felt energized, as if he had been injected with chicken blood.

As long as he proved himself useful, Ye Anping had no reason to expel him. If Ye Anping hadn’t expelled him, Liang Ahting would have had a stable environment to grow up in, free from the hardships of their previous wandering life.

Liang Zhu was quite puzzled. Why had he decided to bring Ahting along with him back then?

“Oh well, there’s no regret medicine in this world. You choose your path, and no matter how tough it gets, you must tread it… Ah…”

He sighed, picked up the next document, and began reading. However, upon seeing its contents, his dark-circled eyes widened slightly.

“…Dead!”

This document belonged to the condolences category. After the death of prominent cultivators, a document would be sent to each sect to announce the news. Liang Zhu’s expression briefly revealed a hint of anger, but after some internal conflict, he resumed his usual emotionless demeanor. He marked read below and used his spiritual power to send the document into the pile to be distributed to the city.

“What does it have to do with me? Why bother thinking about it?”

Suddenly, a loud bang echoed as the door of the book pavilion was kicked open.

“Father!!!”

Liang Zhu, who was already suffering from neurasthenia, was instantly frightened and trembled when he saw Liang Ahting. He quickly stood up and walked over to check the door that Liang Ahting had kicked, scolding her, “Ahting!! Who taught you to kick the door?”

Upon realizing there was no one around, he relaxed, sighed, and then took repair tools and paint from his storage bag to fix the hole in the door.

“Why are you so anxious?” Liang Zhu asked when Liang Ahting expressed her urgency.

“Because… Auntie, she’s back… What should I do?” Liang Ahting’s face was anxious, and she couldn’t speak clearly.

“If they come back, they come back. What trouble have you caused now, girl?” Liang Zhu asked, puzzled by her reaction.

“But… Auntie… she’s back and… she wants to… to break my bones again. When my uncle talks to her, I’ll pretend I’m not here until they leave…” Liang Ahting stuttered nervously.

“What if they don’t leave?” Liang Zhu inquired.

“In that case… then let’s leave, adoptive father! Auntie is too scary!” Liang Ahting urged urgently.

Liang Zhu sighed faintly, realizing the girl’s predicament. “I’ll talk to your aunt later and ask her not to harm you.”

As Pei Lianxue approached, Liang Ahting sensed her presence and hastily hid inside a bookcase.

“Liang Ahting…” Liang Zhu called out, but she responded sharply, “Father, don’t call me!!”

Sighing softly, Liang Zhu straightened himself up and returned to his desk to continue working on the documents.

After a while, Ye Anping and Pei Lianxue entered.

Pei Lianxue immediately inquired, “Brother Liang, where is Ahting?”

“I don’t know,” Liang Zhu replied, gesturing towards the wardrobe, “She’s probably playing somewhere.”

“Okay…” Pei Lianxue seemed disappointed, “Then I’ll look for her elsewhere. Senior brother, I’m going to find Ahting.”

Ye Anping nodded in acknowledgment. After watching his junior sister leave on her sword, he glanced sympathetically at the piles of documents and asked, “Brother Liang, I’ve been away for six months. Is my father using you like this? Why didn’t you talk to him about it?”

Liang Zhu maintained his poker face and responded, “If there are spirit stones involved, I’ll do the job.”

Ye Anping, noticing the dark circles under Liang Zhu’s eyes, pulled up a stool and sat across from him, saying, “But you need to rest properly. By the way, you made quite a bit of money while following me. Are you still short of this little spirit stone?”

Liang Zhu shrugged slightly and replied, “No.”

Ye Anping nodded in response. “Hmm.”

Putting down his pen, Liang Zhu leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and waited for Ye Anping to speak.

Ye Anping, feeling a bit awkward, raised an eyebrow and said, “I just came to check on you to see how you’re doing?”

“Why do you look like that?” Liang Zhu asked flatly.

“Oh… Brother Liang, we have quite a history together, and yet we’re acting so formal?” Ye Anping tried to break the tension.

“Let’s get to the point,” Liang Zhu urged.

“Alright,” Ye Anping conceded. “I have something I want you to help me sell.”

“Is it something from the Southern Region?” Liang Zhu inquired.

“Sort of,” Ye Anping replied, then took out a glass bottle wrapped in oil paper. “This…”

Liang Zhu, expecting some valuable treasure, was puzzled when he saw the bottle wrapped in oil paper. “What kind of elixir is this?”

“I can’t say, see for yourself,” Ye Anping replied.

Liang Zhu took the bottle cautiously, eyeing Ye Anping warily as if expecting it to explode. Carefully, he peeled back the oil paper and peeked inside the bottle.

His movements froze for a moment. Then he hastily wrapped the paper back around the bottle.

“…”

Both men in the room exchanged frozen looks.

After a long silence, Liang Zhu’s gaze shifted slowly toward Ye Anping’s crotch, raising his eyebrows.

Ye Anping blinked, feeling uncomfortable. “Brother Liang, is that gaze appropriate?”
